Low Monday morning 21 at Marquette, MI. license panel OK The House bill does not end the current practice of free fishing licenses for people 65 and older. An attempt by Sen. Jim Ramstad, IR-Minnetonka, to delete the proposed $3.50 license charge for senior citizens was defeated by a 14-6 vote in the Senate committee. Berg said the senior citizens' license fee would raise an estimated $369,000 in 1988 and would also attract $213,000 in federal matching funds.

The last general license increase was approved in 1981, he said. The bill raises the resident fishing license to $12.50 from $9. The combination license for a married couple would be raised to $16 from $13. The deer hunting license would be raised to $20 from $15. Sportsmen's groups have supported the proposed license increases.

The results are based on records kept by 1,774 Minnesota farmers who participate in adult farm management programs. The group's results are considered to be an indicator of how a cross-section of the state's full-time farmers fares from year to year, but are not necessarily representative of all 93,000 farmers in the state. Earnings among the group last year hit an average of $17,839, up 85 percent from 1985's $9,636, the highest level since the farm crisis began.

This return on capital and family labor represents the amount the average farmer, had available to pay principal debts, cover family expenses and put in the bank. Livestoch, profits because rose market during prices the rose while feed costs fell. Crop earnings fell, but this was offset by increased government payments. The earnings were quickly consumed because principal payments averaged nearly $7,000, and family expenses consumed another $20,238. The group of farmers recorded nearly the same level of sales for the past three years, at just over $146,000.

But since 1984, when expenses nearly matched receipts, farmers have managed to trim spending from $144,478 to last year's $133,814. A main reason that expenses are down is that farmers sharply reduced the amount they spent on interest payments last year. This could reflect lower interest rates and debt levels, according to farm management instructors. Interest payments averaged $15,551 last year, down from $19,770 in 1985. Payments amounted to 11.6 percent of a farmer's expenses last year, down from 14.1 percent in the previous year.

High hog profits were the primary contributor to higher earnings last year, according to the records. The average profit hit $20.50 per hundred pounds of hog, compared with $8.90 in 1985. There was also a sharp rebound in cattle feeding, where profits averaged $6.20 per hundredweight, compared with an average I loss of more than $14 last year. 52 Hunting and fishing increases get Senate ST. PAUL (AP) Minnesotans would pay $2 to $5 more for hunting, fishing and trapping licenses and free fishing for senior citizens would end under a measure approved by the Senate Finance Committee.

Most of the proposed increases would not take effect until 1988. The bill would raise about $6.3 million annually for the state Department of Natural Resources, plus about $213,000 in additional federal funds. "It's just become a tougher job to satisfy the demand and it takes money to do it," said Sen. Charles Berg, DFLChokio, the bill's sponsor. No date has been set for a vote by the full Senate, but the issue will be settled before lawmakers adjourn on May 18.

A similar bill with slightly smaller fee increases is pending on the House floor. Obituaries Homer L. Blake Funeral services for Homer L. Blake, 1425 Canary Drive, will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Albert Lea.
